Licensure By Reciprocity

JULY 2008

NOTICE CONCERNING RECIPROCITY OF FLORIDA LICENSES TO PRACTICE PHARMACY

In June 2008, the Florida legislature passed and the Governor of Florida signed, a bill dropping previous barriers to reciprocating a license to practice pharmacy to the state of Florida.

Because the state of Florida now allows full reciprocity of out-of-state pharmacy licenses, the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy agreed at its July 15, 2008 meeting to allow Florida pharmacists to reciprocate their licenses to North Carolina in accordance with all the procedures and substantive requirements applicable to reciprocity candidates from any other state.

If you are interested in reciprocating to North Carolina, please read the procedure sheet, a step by step outline that includes information on the forms that are necessary to complete, the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE), fees and an estimated time frame for completing the process.

Reciprocity Frequently Asked Questions

Reciprocity Meeting PowerPoint Presentation (Review) - Some candidates have found this helpful as a study guide for the MPJE.

Questions are welcome at the Reciprocity meetings. Please bring whatever questions you have to the session you plan to attend. Reciprocity session calendar here.

Preparing for the MPJE - From time to time, reciprocity candidates ask Board staff whether there are courses that can help them prepare for the North Carolina MPJE. The Board does not endorse any particular preparatory course or take any position on whether such a course is needed or advisable. For those interested in taking a course, the Board is aware that the following are offered:

MPJE Licensure Preparation for NC Candidates - Online Pharmacy Law Update & CE

Online Law/QA Course & Pharmacist Refresher Course

We do not reciprocate with California.

NOTE: You are required to attend a Reciprocity Meeting at the Board's office in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Please review the Board Calendar for meeting dates. You will be mailed an appointment letter during the first week of the month for which the required Reciprocity Meeting is held. If you do not receive a letter, you should contact the Board to confirm that you are scheduled to attend.

Before starting employment as a dispensing pharmacist, you are required to be licensed in North Carolina. You should not begin dispensing until you have been issued your license number. Once you have met all the requirements for licensure in North Carolina and accepted by the Board, you will be licensed. Your certificate with your license number will be mailed to you normally within a few days of being licensed.

You can now access your license number by clicking on the link below and entering your name:
